WATER:
If the tide's in and you get it completely wrong you've got the atlantic in play.
OUT OF BOUNDS :
Refer to the previous. When the tide's out you've got the surfer's favourite beach between here and Hawaii. You need to get it a fair bit wrong here though.
BUNKERS :
Just 3 to worry about here. They are all on the right hand side of the hole. There's a sneaky one that's one of the smallest traps you'll see in the centre of the fairway in a little valley that you will only see when you get up close to it. It's certainly one to worry the long drivers there. It would be unwise to think about hitting the green from here. The first greenside bunker is clearly visible at the front right of the putting surface but at a level which is nicely below it. The second is hidden about 10 yards directly past it. Again it's not visible until your up close to it so beware. Both of the greenside bunkers are nasty.
TREES :
None
TEE SHOT:
Where do I start. I suppose first of all it's another blind uphill drive. The best thing to do here is keep the drive well right of the dune to the left of the visible landing area. If you're looking for a visual guide aim about 2 dunes away from the largest dune in the background (vague, I know and the imagination of Walter Mitty needed). Get your yardage right as it's a sharp dogleg left.
APPROACH SHOT:
This really depends on the angle you're coming in from the fairway. If you barely get up the hill and all you can see are dunes, fairway, sea and sky then you're in a bit of bother. Try to aim at the dip in the crest and hope for the best. You may need a spotter here. Let's say you're in a nice position with some view of the green. It's a bit of a daunting view alright as the sea looks deceptively close behind. It's here that you see the astethic beauty of this hole but don't be distracted as this is a tricky one. On the right hand side you've 2 bunkers that are waiting. If you think that going left is an easy escape route then you are walking a tightrope. If you turn the ball left you're looking at a drop that you'll need to abseiling gear to get to. Blast it out the back and you'll be taking on the sun tanning gang on the beach.
GREEN OVERVIEW :
You're in for a right test here. There's a handful of mounds here each of which bring a slope onto the green. Along with that the green has a ridge that separates the near lower half to the higher top half. If you're after two great shots here you could waste all the good work on this green.
OVERALL TIPS :
Play this sensibly. Keep the uphill tee shot to the right. Don't try to fly the left hand dune. It might give you a good view of the green but it will more than likely be from the rough. The line to go on is to the right of it. Not too right but if you look at where the rough and the fairway meet at the right of the dune, just right of that is the perfect line in. If you're going to go pear shaped off the tee miss it right. There's plenty space out there. If you've enough distance to get near the crest of the hill then you need to be as accurate as possible for the second. The entrance to the green is relatively tight but the aspect that you should play on your mind here is the drop on the left hand side that the late Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay wouldn't fancy tackling. Should you be lucky enough to find the dancefloor here take a 2 putt with glee and cartwheel your way to the next tee.
