CLUB FORMED : 1966
COURSE DESIGNER : John D Harris
BRIEF HISTORY :
Established in 1966 this was designed as a major championship course of international standard. Since then it has developed into one of the best parkland courses in the west of Ireland. For a number of years the club hosted an international Pro-Am where the top ten professionals on the European tour as well as quite a few US tour Pro's. Shannon has also hosted the Irish and European amateur championships and will host the European Senior Amateur championship in 2008.
INTERESTING FACT :
On the 16th of August 1982 Greg Norman took part in the Shannon International Pro-Am and drove his ball over 400 yards from the tee of the 18th hole. He landed about 80 yards from the pin of the Par 5. There is a plaque there to this day that honors this feat. (Incidentally, Norman only ended up making par on the hole - A four from 80 yards for a future major winner, there's hope for us all yet)

SSS SCORE : 72(Champ) - 71 (Medal) - 70 (Forward) - 74 (Ladies)
HARDEST HOLE :
The 9th, it's so long and narrow. It's a par 5 in a par 4's clothing. Very difficult.
EASIEST HOLE :
It's either the 5th or the 10th but I'll go for the 10th. It's a short iron and trust your yardage. Not too complicated.
FAVOURITE HOLE :
The 17th. This is a really tough hole but the views and the challenges are worth it. You can see Limerick and Kerry from the teebox and the tee shot over the estuary is a hazardous test of your skills. (Or in my case - Lack there of)
HARDEST PAR 3 :
It's between the 12th and the 17th but I'll actually go for the 12th on the club tees but there's only one winner from the championship ones, the 17th by a mile.
HARDEST PAR 4 :
The 9th, I'll leave it at that. Have a battle with this.
HARDEST PAR 5 :
It was the 2nd from the club tees because of the extremely tight drive but now it's the 18th from the clubs because of the green but from the championship tees there's easily one winner. The 8th, there's such a carry and from there if your not a huge driver your taking on a few tough shots with a few gambles along the way.
EASIEST PAR 3 :
The 10th. Hit it high and keep it accurate and your on the green. Don't worry too much about this one as long as you don't go near the sand.
EASIEST PAR 4 :
The 5th. It's short and the fairway's wide. Plenty chances for a birdie with a good second shot but a par is a very good possibility here. Just don't go too wild on it.
EASIEST PAR 5 :
It used to be the 18th before the green went mad but now it's the 6th although all par 5s here are tricky so I would class any of them as being overly easy.

SCENERY :
The trees around the course act as a pitfall for those who stray with shots but they are very pleasing to look at especially during the summer months. An interesting view is of Shannon Airport and of the planes that are taking off and landing parallel to your shots on 8 and 9. The best view of all though is when you hit the final few holes. You can see west Clare, Limerick and Kerry from the 17th and 18th tee boxes and if you are lucky enough to be there on a clear evening towards the end of the day you will see a terrific sunset.
